proportion <strong>of</strong> weight than <strong>the</strong> outer one, hence it is<br />

more liable to <strong>in</strong>juries <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation, consequently<br />

<strong>in</strong>duc<strong>in</strong>g this bony deposit which has been termed<br />

spl<strong>in</strong>t. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner bone supports <strong>the</strong> entire weight<br />

which is transmitted to one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> small knee bones ; it<br />

is <strong>the</strong> only support <strong>of</strong> that bone, while but a portion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> weight is susta<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> outer spl<strong>in</strong>t bone, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> pressure is divided between it <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> cannon bone.<br />

Many smiths, who are but imperfectly acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir pr<strong>of</strong>ession, most absurdly elevate <strong>the</strong> outer heel <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> shoe, which throws an additional weight on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>ner spl<strong>in</strong>t bone. Spl<strong>in</strong>ts very <strong>of</strong>ten are <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> a<br />

blow given with <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot, <strong>and</strong> when a spl<strong>in</strong>t<br />

is suspected, that part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leg should be rubbed for<br />

three or four days with strong mercurial o<strong>in</strong>tment ;<br />

this<br />

will s<strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> tumour <strong>and</strong> make it porous; <strong>the</strong>n it<br />

should be blistered with Mr. Gregory's famed vesico<br />

sudorific, which will speedily remove <strong>the</strong> spl<strong>in</strong>t by<br />

absorption Overreaches are <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> plac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> toe <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>d foot upon <strong>the</strong> heel<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fore foot, long h<strong>in</strong>d-legged <strong>horse</strong>s are very guilty<br />

<strong>of</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g this when jump<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to heavy l<strong>and</strong>; <strong>the</strong>y cannot<br />

get <strong>the</strong>ir fore feet out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way soon enough, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

toe <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>d foot, strik<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> heel with great force,<br />

sometimes will cut <strong>the</strong> heel nearly <strong>of</strong>f. If <strong>the</strong> wound is<br />

large, it is <strong>of</strong>ten troublesome. <strong>The</strong> first th<strong>in</strong>g to do with<br />

an overreach is to wash clean with warm water, exam<strong>in</strong>e<br />

carefully <strong>and</strong> make sure <strong>the</strong>re is no foreign substance <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wound. If <strong>the</strong> piece cut down with <strong>the</strong> foot is nearly<br />

<strong>of</strong>f, <strong>and</strong> is only <strong>of</strong> a horny substance, do not hesitate to<br />

cut it <strong>of</strong>f, for it will heal much sooner with it <strong>of</strong>f than
