two cases above are enough to show how necessary it is<br />

to proceed with <strong>the</strong> utmost caution, if it is only expected<br />

that a <strong>horse</strong> is <strong>in</strong>flicted with gl<strong>and</strong>ers. <strong>The</strong> remote<br />

cause <strong>of</strong> gl<strong>and</strong>ers is we fear to be found <strong>in</strong> ill-ventilated<br />

<strong>and</strong> badly dra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>stable</strong>s ;<br />

<strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> ammonia from <strong>the</strong><br />

ur<strong>in</strong>e fills <strong>the</strong> whole atmosphere, which be<strong>in</strong>g constantly<br />

<strong>in</strong>haled ultimately produces a poisonous effect upon <strong>the</strong><br />

lungs, caused by an undue quantity <strong>of</strong> ox}^gen be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>haled ; besides <strong>the</strong> constant irritation which it must<br />

naturally produce upon that delicate portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mucous membrane, which is <strong>the</strong> organ <strong>of</strong> smell, it<br />

<strong>in</strong>duces <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> those tubercles which once<br />

formed can never be eradicated. We f<strong>in</strong>d that gl<strong>and</strong>ers<br />

almost always breaks out <strong>in</strong> ill-ventilated <strong>stable</strong>s, <strong>and</strong><br />

which are likewise kept too hot. Fracture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nasal<br />

bone has been said to produce it <strong>in</strong> some few <strong>in</strong>stances,<br />

as well as a long cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>veterate catarrah with<br />

a constant <strong>and</strong> irritat<strong>in</strong>g discharge from <strong>the</strong> nostrils. We<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>of</strong>ty w ell-aired <strong>stable</strong>s <strong>of</strong> gentlemen this<br />

disease is comparatively little known, <strong>and</strong> when it does<br />

shew itself <strong>in</strong> such it has <strong>in</strong> all probability been <strong>in</strong>tro-<br />

duced by some fresh importation to <strong>the</strong> stud <strong>of</strong> one or<br />

more <strong>horse</strong>s previously affected. In such a case all <strong>the</strong><br />

animals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> may catch <strong>the</strong> malady, as<br />

gl<strong>and</strong>ers is well known to be highly contagious. In<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crowded <strong>and</strong> ill-aired <strong>stable</strong>s <strong>of</strong> London<br />

<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r large towns this disease is but too <strong>of</strong>ten an
