to ano<strong>the</strong>r dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y come home <strong>the</strong>y<br />

leave <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong>s wet <strong>and</strong> dirty while <strong>the</strong>y are dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>re little sense away at a public-house bar. <strong>The</strong>re is<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> catch<strong>in</strong>g cold <strong>and</strong> cough<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> this is to be seen every day at Newmarket—that<br />

place where <strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>y cannot be taught anyth<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> that to <strong>the</strong>m everyth<strong>in</strong>g is but a tale already told.<br />

<strong>The</strong> great cause <strong>of</strong> cold-catch<strong>in</strong>g is not, as most people<br />

suppose, by go<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> a warm <strong>stable</strong> <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> cold, but<br />

by com<strong>in</strong>g direct from <strong>the</strong> cold <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> hot air <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>stable</strong>, <strong>and</strong> caus<strong>in</strong>g a too sudden relax<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pores<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong>, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> too sensitive, when <strong>the</strong><br />

least draught causes a check <strong>and</strong> chill, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> animal<br />

soon commences to cough. As I have before stated,<br />

after wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stall or box he has to<br />

sleep <strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> damp <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> floor rises <strong>and</strong> penetrates<br />

<strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong>, which produces <strong>in</strong>fluenza (by depriv<strong>in</strong>g it<br />

<strong>of</strong> animal electricity), <strong>the</strong> worst compla<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong><br />

is subject to, a short history <strong>of</strong> which will not be out<br />

<strong>of</strong> place here.<br />

Influenza is no new compla<strong>in</strong>t ; it was well known<br />

to our forefa<strong>the</strong>rs. <strong>The</strong>re is very little doubt but it was<br />

known to <strong>the</strong> Romans, <strong>and</strong> was called <strong>the</strong> plague. We<br />

have au<strong>the</strong>ntic accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenza from Solleysel, a<br />

celebrated veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> German army, <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> year lG-i8. It began by fever, great prostration, tears<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> eyes, <strong>and</strong> an abundant mucous dis-<br />

charge <strong>of</strong> a greenish colour from <strong>the</strong> nostrils. <strong>The</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

experienced loss <strong>of</strong> appetite <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ears were cold, <strong>and</strong><br />

few <strong>of</strong> those attacked recovered. <strong>The</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> adopted<br />

was with a view to neutralise <strong>the</strong> malignity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poison
