In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 159<br />

glut<strong>in</strong>ous <strong>in</strong> its substance. If rubbed between <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ger<br />

<strong>and</strong> thumb it has a sticky feel. This discharge also<br />

differs from common cold by be<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>uous,<br />

whereas <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter it is only discharged at <strong>in</strong>tervals.<br />

<strong>The</strong> matter discharged <strong>in</strong> this disease differs from that <strong>of</strong><br />

a common catarrh <strong>in</strong> its specific gravity. If a small<br />

quantity is dropped <strong>in</strong>to water it s<strong>in</strong>ks, <strong>and</strong> it will not<br />

mix with water if stirred with it ; whereas <strong>the</strong> mucous<br />

discharge <strong>of</strong> a common cold swims near <strong>the</strong> surface, <strong>and</strong><br />

preserves its slimy consistence although stirred, <strong>and</strong> will<br />

not com<strong>in</strong>gle with it.<br />

A s<strong>in</strong>gular character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gl<strong>and</strong>ers is that it always<br />

attacks <strong>the</strong> left nostril, very few cases hav<strong>in</strong>g ever been<br />

seen <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> was gl<strong>and</strong>ered <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right<br />

nostril. Mr. Dupay, a celebrated veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon <strong>and</strong><br />

director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Surgery at Toulouse, mentions<br />

that out <strong>of</strong> eight hundred cases <strong>of</strong> gl<strong>and</strong>ers which came<br />

under his care dur<strong>in</strong>g his practice, only one was affected<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right nostril. Shortly after <strong>the</strong> discharge from <strong>the</strong><br />

nostril takes place, <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> becomes affected <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower jaw, which swell to a considerable<br />

extent, <strong>and</strong> ultimately become attached to <strong>the</strong> bone.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r character by which this disease is well known<br />

is, that at no time is <strong>the</strong> discharge from <strong>the</strong> nostrils ac-<br />

companied by a cough. Some considerable time after <strong>the</strong><br />

discharge has made its appearance, <strong>the</strong> gluey substances<br />

will be seen accompany<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mucous discharge. It is<br />

this pus, m<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r gluey matter, which,<br />

absorbed by <strong>the</strong> circulat<strong>in</strong>g vessels <strong>and</strong> carried to <strong>the</strong><br />

gl<strong>and</strong>, affects it. However, <strong>in</strong> common cold <strong>the</strong> gl<strong>and</strong> is<br />

sometimes swelled, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> real gl<strong>and</strong>ers <strong>the</strong> swell-
