In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Moad. 5<br />

1 could not account for it be<strong>in</strong>g done <strong>in</strong> no o<strong>the</strong>r way<br />

than by slipp<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> slop<strong>in</strong>g pavement. I was called<br />

a short time ago to see a <strong>horse</strong> belong<strong>in</strong>g to a carman,<br />

which <strong>in</strong> shak<strong>in</strong>g itself <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> slipped <strong>and</strong> fell,<br />

break<strong>in</strong>g both knees, one very severely ; this was<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r victim to a false system <strong>of</strong> pav<strong>in</strong>g. If you go<br />

<strong>in</strong>to any <strong>stable</strong> that is paved with <strong>the</strong> fore part <strong>the</strong><br />

highest, you will f<strong>in</strong>d all <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s hang back to <strong>the</strong><br />

extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir rack cha<strong>in</strong>s, or st<strong>and</strong> crossways <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

stalls, to try to raise <strong>the</strong>ir h<strong>in</strong>d feet <strong>in</strong>to a natural<br />

position. Go aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>to a <strong>stable</strong> <strong>of</strong> loose boxes that<br />

have a grate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> box, <strong>and</strong> what do we<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d ? Every <strong>horse</strong> with his fore feet <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> dra<strong>in</strong> or lowest<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> box, while his haunches are on <strong>the</strong> highest<br />

ground. <strong>The</strong>se facts should be enough to conv<strong>in</strong>ce any-<br />

one that <strong>the</strong> present system is altoge<strong>the</strong>r wrong.<br />

LIGHT.<br />

" St<strong>and</strong> on one side <strong>and</strong> let God's light <strong>and</strong> sunsh<strong>in</strong>e<br />

fall upon me <strong>and</strong> my <strong>horse</strong>," are <strong>the</strong> words I should like<br />

to impress upon every builder. Go through all <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>stable</strong>s <strong>in</strong> town <strong>and</strong> country <strong>and</strong> see how few have had<br />

due attention for light bestowed upon <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong><br />

builder. We f<strong>in</strong>d small w<strong>in</strong>dows, <strong>and</strong> not one half <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m will open, <strong>and</strong> where <strong>the</strong>y are put <strong>the</strong>y are placed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> very spot to give <strong>the</strong> smallest amount <strong>of</strong> light<br />

possible. Whereas <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dows <strong>in</strong> every <strong>stable</strong> should<br />

be large, <strong>and</strong> open from top <strong>and</strong> bottom, <strong>and</strong> should be<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> east if possible, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s' heads to<br />

<strong>the</strong> west, so that <strong>the</strong> sun may sh<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> as<br />

soon as it rises <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g, spread<strong>in</strong>g its light <strong>in</strong>to
