livid <strong>and</strong> it scarcely seems to brea<strong>the</strong>; it gr<strong>in</strong>ds its<br />

teeth, <strong>and</strong> this may be regarded as a certa<strong>in</strong> symptom<br />

<strong>of</strong> dissolution. Stagger<strong>in</strong>g ensues, <strong>and</strong> it f<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>in</strong> its stall. Sometimes if <strong>in</strong> a loose box or yard<br />

it will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to walk round <strong>and</strong> round <strong>in</strong> a circle,<br />

with its head slightly sideways. If <strong>the</strong> left lung is<br />

aftected it will walk round on <strong>the</strong> right circle, always<br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> left side on <strong>the</strong> outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> circle, but<br />

if <strong>the</strong> right lung is <strong>the</strong> seat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attack it will walk<br />

<strong>in</strong> a circle quite <strong>the</strong> reverse. When <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>s<br />

<strong>in</strong> this manner it is a bad siom, not one <strong>in</strong><br />

fifty ever recover<strong>in</strong>g. This last is a picture <strong>of</strong> that<br />

k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation that has lurked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> system<br />

without exhibit<strong>in</strong>g premonitory symptoms, <strong>and</strong> which<br />

<strong>in</strong> most cases proves fatal. Aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re are cases <strong>in</strong><br />

which <strong>the</strong> disease is so rapid that it will have under-<br />

gone its entire stages <strong>in</strong> twenty-four hours, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

this short time <strong>the</strong> entire mass <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lungs will have<br />

suffered complete destruction. Such a case has been<br />

satisfactorily proved not to proceed from long <strong>and</strong><br />

deep-rooted <strong>in</strong>flammation, but assuredly from tiie<br />

very reverse. It has been caused by <strong>the</strong> extraordi-<br />

nary degree <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation burst<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> coat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> vessels <strong>and</strong> fill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> air-cells with blood, thus<br />

<strong>in</strong>stantly destroy<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir functions. <strong>The</strong>re are bad<br />

cases which are not so rapid <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir term<strong>in</strong>ation, but<br />

which are never<strong>the</strong>less equally fatal. This happens<br />

when no rupture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vessels has taken place, <strong>and</strong><br />

although means have been adopted to take <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong><br />

pressure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation, yet <strong>the</strong>y have been<br />

<strong>in</strong>sufficient to produce <strong>the</strong> desired effect. In such a-
