In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 11<br />

not altoge<strong>the</strong>r pleasant, my object be<strong>in</strong>g to benefit both<br />

man <strong>and</strong> <strong>horse</strong>, be<strong>in</strong>g always proud to praise, yet not<br />

afraid to blame. I shall cont<strong>in</strong>ue from time to time to<br />

praise or blame, accord<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> subject I treat deserves.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g endeavoured to show a few faults <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>stable</strong>, I will try <strong>and</strong> show what a <strong>stable</strong> should be to<br />

be healthy. <strong>The</strong> three most essential th<strong>in</strong>gs required<br />

for <strong>the</strong> comfort <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> are a dry, well-made <strong>and</strong><br />

dra<strong>in</strong>ed floor, large w<strong>in</strong>dows, <strong>and</strong> free ventilation. <strong>The</strong><br />

floor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> should be paved with hard brick, laid<br />

upon a bed <strong>of</strong> concrete six <strong>in</strong>ches thick. <strong>The</strong> brick<br />

should be laid dry, <strong>and</strong> afterwards soaked with clean<br />

water, <strong>the</strong>n grouted with Portl<strong>and</strong> cement ; this will<br />

effectually prevent damp ris<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> also prevent <strong>the</strong><br />

ur<strong>in</strong>e from soak<strong>in</strong>g through. <strong>The</strong> gutters, down <strong>the</strong><br />

centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stall, should be shallow <strong>and</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> fore feet, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> grate should be sunk half-an<strong>in</strong>ch<br />

lower than <strong>the</strong> bricks to allow for wear. Many<br />

floors are laid with <strong>the</strong> bricks level with <strong>the</strong> grate, <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> a short time <strong>the</strong> bricks wear away, leav<strong>in</strong>g a hollow<br />

alongside <strong>the</strong> grate where <strong>the</strong> ur<strong>in</strong>e will st<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

bricks gett<strong>in</strong>g saturated, become comparatively so many<br />

lumps <strong>of</strong> ammonia, poison<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> air with its fumes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> dra<strong>in</strong>s ot all <strong>stable</strong>s should be large, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> glazed<br />

tiles, <strong>and</strong> should have a fall <strong>of</strong> at least one <strong>in</strong>ch <strong>in</strong> 40, to<br />

prevent accumulation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> small particles <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

chok<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dra<strong>in</strong>s. <strong>The</strong> dra<strong>in</strong>s should run <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

cesspool, so that <strong>the</strong> liquid manure may be saved if<br />

wanted for <strong>the</strong> garden ; <strong>and</strong> what gardener will not<br />

want liquid manure if he can get it h<strong>and</strong>y ? <strong>The</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>dows should be large, extend<strong>in</strong>g from near <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>
