In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road, 171<br />

mate two drachms, spirit <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e four ounces, or, what I<br />

have proved equally as good, carbolic acid one ounce,<br />

boil<strong>in</strong>g water one quart, well agitated ; this should be<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ued until <strong>the</strong> bottom <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ulcers assume a<br />

healthy colour, <strong>of</strong> a clear red appearance, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> spongy<br />

foul look has disappeared. When this is <strong>the</strong> case <strong>the</strong><br />

matter discharged will have completely changed its<br />

aspect, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> glary, it will have<br />

become thick, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> a white or yellowish colour.<br />

At this stage some writers recommend an application <strong>of</strong><br />

Friar's balsam, but I have quite discarded that, as I f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

a much better substitute <strong>in</strong> carbolised oil. Lur<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

<strong>and</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g until <strong>the</strong> ulcers, have dried up. Sometimes<br />

this acts violently as a purgative, at o<strong>the</strong>r times <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong>'s mouth becomes sore, <strong>in</strong> which case one drachm <strong>of</strong><br />

sulphate <strong>of</strong> copper should be substituted for <strong>the</strong> corossive<br />

sublimate. It not untrequently happens <strong>in</strong> this disease<br />

that one k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e when adm<strong>in</strong>istered loses its<br />

effect, <strong>and</strong> it may be necessary to give medic<strong>in</strong>e alter-<br />

nately or a comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>es, such as <strong>the</strong> follow-<br />
