will rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> this position from one to twelve hours,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n falls ; its eyes are open <strong>and</strong> protrud<strong>in</strong>g, with<br />

a fixed seemedly unconscious stare, with <strong>the</strong> pupils<br />

much dilated; it gr<strong>in</strong>ds its teeth, <strong>the</strong> whole frame<br />

manifests twitch<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> ve<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neck is much<br />

<strong>in</strong>flected, its muzzle cold, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> attempt<strong>in</strong>g to swallow<br />

<strong>the</strong> dr<strong>in</strong>k is returned through <strong>the</strong> nostrils <strong>and</strong> mouth,<br />

<strong>and</strong> it dungs <strong>in</strong>voluntarily ; strong convulsive twitch-<br />

<strong>in</strong>gs follow, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> prelude to death.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> first stage <strong>of</strong> this disease it comes on progres-<br />

sively with depression, sleep<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> feebleness, which<br />

is <strong>in</strong>dicated by dulness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eye, as it <strong>in</strong>creases it<br />

presses its head aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> wall or rack, <strong>and</strong> when<br />

aroused from this position it seems alarmed. In this<br />

compla<strong>in</strong>t <strong>the</strong> remedies require to be prompt <strong>and</strong>
