shoes rema<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> for six weeks <strong>and</strong> two<br />

months at a stretch, at <strong>the</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g corns,<br />

<strong>and</strong> spra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> back s<strong>in</strong>ews by an extra amount <strong>of</strong><br />

leverage caused by <strong>the</strong> leng<strong>the</strong>ned growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> toe.<br />

<strong>The</strong> shoe rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on too long is sure to become<br />

embedded <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> heel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot, consequently <strong>the</strong><br />

ho<strong>of</strong> grows down on <strong>the</strong> outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoe <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bear<strong>in</strong>g is thus thrown on to <strong>the</strong> angular portion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sole. Cont<strong>in</strong>ual pressure on <strong>the</strong> sole is sure to<br />

<strong>in</strong>duce <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>and</strong> corns, <strong>the</strong> shoe be<strong>in</strong>g on a<br />

loner time sets loosened at <strong>the</strong> heels, which admits <strong>of</strong><br />

gravel between it <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> crust, which hav<strong>in</strong>g accumu-<br />

lated at <strong>the</strong> angles naturally <strong>in</strong>s<strong>in</strong>uates itself <strong>in</strong>to<br />

noth<strong>in</strong>g can be more <strong>in</strong>judicious than to allow <strong>the</strong> shoes<br />

to rema<strong>in</strong> too long on ; even if <strong>the</strong>y are not worn out<br />

<strong>the</strong>y should be taken <strong>of</strong>f every twenty-one days <strong>and</strong><br />

re-adjusted to free <strong>the</strong> feet from long cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

pressure. In shoe<strong>in</strong>g, too, tlie blacksmith will <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

resort to that <strong>in</strong>jurious <strong>and</strong> ridiculous cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot, <strong>and</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g away <strong>the</strong> bars. This<br />

renders it necessary that <strong>the</strong> shoe should be levelled<br />

<strong>in</strong>ward, so as to accommodate it to <strong>the</strong>ir senseless<br />

cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot; consequently an<br />

unnatural disposition to contraction is <strong>in</strong>duced by this
