will f<strong>in</strong>d a dead <strong>horse</strong>. In <strong>the</strong>se cases it is always<br />

advisable to give clysters which should be repeated<br />

every half-hour, until <strong>the</strong> bowels operate ; <strong>the</strong> best<br />

<strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>iest clyster is composed <strong>of</strong> oatmeal gruel, three<br />

quarts, common salt three ounces, <strong>and</strong> olive oil half-a-<br />

p<strong>in</strong>t. Some old writers recommend blow<strong>in</strong>g cayenne up<br />

<strong>the</strong> nostrils, as well as powdered bark <strong>and</strong> spices, given<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternally, <strong>and</strong> blisters beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> ears ; but <strong>the</strong>se are<br />

perfectly useless, <strong>in</strong>deed, <strong>the</strong> former are perfectly<br />

ridiculous. Should <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> sufficiently recover to<br />

be able to take food, boiled barley, scalded bran,<br />

oatmeal, <strong>and</strong> lukewarm water may be given until he<br />

has recovered enough to eat hay, when <strong>the</strong> hay should<br />

be given <strong>in</strong> small quantities <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> best quality.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has been subjected to <strong>the</strong> scour<strong>in</strong>g-out<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciple, it is necessary to give medic<strong>in</strong>e to give a tone<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> stomach, <strong>and</strong> set <strong>the</strong> digestive organs<br />

perform<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>of</strong>fices ; for this purpose <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

will be given with advantage—lenetive electuary four<br />

ounces, cream <strong>of</strong> tartar four ounces, purified nitre two<br />

drachms, treacle two ounces, to be dissolved <strong>in</strong> hot ale,<br />

<strong>and</strong> given <strong>the</strong> first th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a tepid state.<br />

This may be repeated two or three times, allow<strong>in</strong>g two<br />

or three days to elapse between <strong>the</strong>m. If <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong><br />

after this should not feed well, it may be necessary to<br />

give tonic medic<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> for this purpose obta<strong>in</strong> half a<br />

dozen tonic balls. I said <strong>in</strong> an early page <strong>of</strong> this work<br />

that I had placed a valuable receipt for tonic balls <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Messrs. Perks <strong>and</strong> Llewellyn, chemists, Hitch<strong>in</strong>,<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y will supply with full <strong>in</strong>structions, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

will be found all that are required to perfect a cure.
