are liable to, it is not to be wondered at. If <strong>the</strong> less<br />

show any signs <strong>of</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g been b<strong>and</strong>aged a well-<br />

grounded suspicion may be enterta<strong>in</strong>ed that all is not<br />

right. Pay particular attention to <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

animal's w<strong>in</strong>d, for if <strong>the</strong> animal is touched <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d<br />

he is sure to be " loaded " before go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a fair.<br />

Perhaps my readers may misunderst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> word<br />

" loaded." This is ano<strong>the</strong>r trick <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unpr<strong>in</strong>cipled<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>horse</strong> coper. When <strong>the</strong>y have a <strong>horse</strong><br />

broken-w<strong>in</strong>ded which <strong>the</strong>y wish to sell, <strong>the</strong>y generally<br />

contrive to get some one to make a " swop," i.e.,<br />

exchange ; by do<strong>in</strong>g so <strong>the</strong>y steer clear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> animal is not returnable. When <strong>the</strong>y are about<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>stable</strong> <strong>the</strong>y load him,<br />

this is done by mak<strong>in</strong>g up a quarter <strong>of</strong> a pound <strong>of</strong> shot<br />

<strong>in</strong>to a ball with soap, <strong>and</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g it down <strong>the</strong> animal's<br />

throat. This load<strong>in</strong>g is done to bear down <strong>the</strong> animal's<br />

stomach <strong>and</strong> give temporary relief to <strong>the</strong> animal's lungs,<br />

<strong>and</strong> many a poor man has found out next day that he<br />

has exchanged a useful <strong>horse</strong> <strong>and</strong> given several pounds<br />

to boot for an animal that is not worth fifty shill<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r trick which is carried on to a considerable<br />

extent is <strong>the</strong> art <strong>of</strong> " bishop<strong>in</strong>g." This is a trick which<br />

takes its name from an unpr<strong>in</strong>cipled dealer <strong>of</strong> olden<br />

times, who was supposed to be <strong>the</strong> first man who re-<br />

sorted to this piece <strong>of</strong> roguishness. Bishop<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>horse</strong><br />

is done by throw<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>horse</strong> <strong>and</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g a large wooden<br />

roller <strong>in</strong>to its mouth while <strong>the</strong> operator files down its<br />

teeth ; <strong>the</strong>n, with irons made for <strong>the</strong> purpose, he pro-<br />

ceeds to burn <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teeth, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m<br />

resemble <strong>the</strong> natural marks <strong>in</strong> a young <strong>horse</strong>, so that a<br />
