to touch <strong>the</strong> parts with nitrate <strong>of</strong> silver or lunar caustic<br />

to consolidate <strong>the</strong> parts. This is a good omen ;<br />

but<br />

should this <strong>treatment</strong> not have <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g up a<br />

healthy condition, <strong>the</strong>n it will be necessary to call <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> aid ot a practical veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon, for <strong>in</strong> all<br />

probability <strong>the</strong> bones <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neck are fractured, <strong>and</strong> as<br />

<strong>the</strong>se can only be successfully treated by a practical<br />

man it is useless giv<strong>in</strong>g my readers <strong>the</strong> mode adopted.<br />

<strong>The</strong> cord <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seton should be dressed every morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with carbolized oil or corrosive sublimate half a<br />

drachm, spirit <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e two ounces, but <strong>in</strong> most cases<br />

carbolized oil is best. Setons are largely employed <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>management</strong> <strong>of</strong> domesticated animals <strong>in</strong> disease<br />

<strong>and</strong> even <strong>in</strong> health. <strong>The</strong>y consist <strong>of</strong> pieces <strong>of</strong> tape or<br />

cord, which are carried for some distance under <strong>the</strong><br />

sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> allowed to rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> a considerable time to<br />

keep <strong>the</strong> passage open for <strong>the</strong> dra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g away <strong>of</strong> some<br />

morbid product, or to establish some curative or<br />

prophylactic process by <strong>the</strong> local irritation which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

produce. <strong>The</strong> word seton is no doubt obta<strong>in</strong>ed from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> seta, coarse hair or bristles, which were <strong>the</strong><br />

orig<strong>in</strong>al agents for this purpose; at <strong>the</strong> present time<br />

<strong>the</strong> material <strong>in</strong> common use is coarse tape vary<strong>in</strong>g<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case or <strong>the</strong> whim<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> operator. It is <strong>in</strong>troduced by means <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>-<br />

strument called <strong>the</strong> seton needle, <strong>and</strong> is formed <strong>of</strong><br />

a Hat piece <strong>of</strong> steel vary<strong>in</strong>g from four to eight <strong>in</strong>ches<br />

<strong>in</strong> length. <strong>The</strong> one end has a square aperture or eye,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r end is flattened out at <strong>the</strong> edges which<br />

jo<strong>in</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r at an acute angle. <strong>The</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t is <strong>of</strong>ten
