should be immediate <strong>and</strong> ample ; <strong>and</strong> after bleed<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

purgative medic<strong>in</strong>e must next be adm<strong>in</strong>istered, because<br />

<strong>the</strong> mucous membrane <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bowels <strong>and</strong> coat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

o± <strong>the</strong> stomach are <strong>in</strong> most <strong>in</strong>stances affected sym-<br />

pa<strong>the</strong>tically by a deranged action <strong>in</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> system. Should this not be <strong>the</strong> case<br />

<strong>the</strong>y may be o<strong>the</strong>rwise irregular, which <strong>in</strong>variably<br />

<strong>in</strong>creases all k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation, <strong>and</strong> fever is<br />

<strong>in</strong>duced more especially when <strong>the</strong>re is much<br />

retention. In any case purg<strong>in</strong>g has <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong><br />

lessen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> quantity <strong>of</strong> blood, by remov<strong>in</strong>g from it <strong>the</strong><br />

serous or watery portion, <strong>and</strong> by determ<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> blood<br />

to <strong>the</strong> bowels. <strong>The</strong> pressure is necessarily removed from<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>flamed vessels, as it is a law <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> animal economy<br />

that where <strong>the</strong> circulation is directed to one set <strong>of</strong> vessels<br />

it proportionately dim<strong>in</strong>ishes <strong>the</strong> flow <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> system. Purg<strong>in</strong>g, by produc<strong>in</strong>g languor <strong>and</strong> sickness,<br />

lessens <strong>the</strong> general excitement, <strong>and</strong> hence <strong>the</strong> pressure<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> circulation is circumscribed. In adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g<br />

medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> cases <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal <strong>in</strong>flammation much caution<br />

<strong>and</strong> consideration is required, because what would be<br />

beneficial <strong>in</strong> some cases may be prejudicial <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Thus <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lungs aloes may be given as a<br />

purgative, but <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bowels it would be<br />

decidedly wrong, from its tendency to gripe, <strong>and</strong> even <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lungs purgative medic<strong>in</strong>e should not<br />

be given until after <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammatory symptoms have<br />

abated. In external <strong>in</strong>flammation, great difference <strong>of</strong><br />

op<strong>in</strong>ion prevails as to <strong>the</strong> <strong>treatment</strong> ; some recommend<br />

cold embrocations as <strong>the</strong> most proper mode <strong>of</strong> <strong>treatment</strong>,<br />
