if kept on. If, however, <strong>the</strong> wound is deep, after it has<br />

been carefully washed, <strong>and</strong> you are satisfied <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is no dirt or o<strong>the</strong>r substance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wound, get some<br />

carbolic oil made with one part pure carbolic acid, <strong>and</strong><br />

five parts f<strong>in</strong>est Lucca or salad oil, pour some <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

wound, <strong>the</strong>n press <strong>the</strong> lips <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wound as close toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

as possible, <strong>and</strong> if you can put a stitch <strong>in</strong>to it with a<br />

curved needle to hold <strong>the</strong> lips toge<strong>the</strong>r, it will greatly<br />

facilitate <strong>the</strong> heal<strong>in</strong>g process.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g got <strong>the</strong> lips toge<strong>the</strong>r, saturate a pellet <strong>of</strong> tow<br />

with <strong>the</strong> oil, b<strong>and</strong>age it firmly over <strong>the</strong> w T ound, <strong>and</strong> do<br />

not remove <strong>the</strong> b<strong>and</strong>age aga<strong>in</strong> for three or four days, by<br />

which time <strong>the</strong> wound will have become consolidated.<br />

Sometimes <strong>the</strong> leg will swell very much, <strong>and</strong> masters <strong>and</strong><br />

grooms fear that <strong>the</strong> leg is too tightly b<strong>and</strong>aged <strong>and</strong> undo<br />

it too soon, caus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> wound to slough, <strong>and</strong> leave an<br />

ugly scar for <strong>the</strong>ir pa<strong>in</strong>s. When legs swell from <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>flammation set up by <strong>the</strong> wound, it can easily be pre-<br />

vented from ris<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> leg to <strong>the</strong> body by punctur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> swollen mass with <strong>the</strong> lancet <strong>in</strong> three or four places<br />

this will let out <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammatory fluid <strong>and</strong> arrest <strong>the</strong><br />

swell<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> limb should be ba<strong>the</strong>d with arnica lotion<br />

composed <strong>of</strong> arnica b.p. one part, <strong>and</strong> cold spr<strong>in</strong>g water<br />

ten parts. Keep <strong>the</strong> limb moist with l<strong>in</strong>en b<strong>and</strong>ages<br />

soaked with <strong>the</strong> lotion ; never let <strong>the</strong>m get dry, or you<br />

will do much more harm than good. It is better to have<br />

<strong>the</strong> legs washed with <strong>the</strong> lotion <strong>and</strong> no b<strong>and</strong>ages put on<br />

than to let <strong>the</strong> b<strong>and</strong>age get dry. Short-legged <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

very seldom overreach, but long-legged ones <strong>of</strong>ten do—to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir owner's cost, <strong>and</strong> risk <strong>of</strong> neck <strong>and</strong> collar-bone, &c,
