<strong>the</strong> mouth, <strong>the</strong>re is a ropy saliva from <strong>the</strong> mouth hang-<br />

<strong>and</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>e carefully to f<strong>in</strong>d out if it is <strong>of</strong> a recent<br />

date or an old <strong>and</strong> cankered wound. Next look care-<br />

fully at <strong>the</strong> eyes for gutta screna <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r affections<br />

<strong>of</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>dness ; see that <strong>the</strong> wi<strong>the</strong>rs are not fistulous<br />

carefully scrut<strong>in</strong>ise <strong>the</strong> knees by lift<strong>in</strong>g up <strong>the</strong> legs <strong>and</strong><br />

bend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> knees <strong>in</strong> an upward form, if <strong>the</strong>y have been<br />

broken ever so slightly, this will reveal <strong>the</strong> scar. If<br />

you f<strong>in</strong>d a small scar, look to <strong>the</strong> manner <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong><br />

wears its shoes, <strong>and</strong> if you f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> toe worn away<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shoe <strong>in</strong> good condition, look<br />

out for a stunibler, <strong>and</strong> a stumbl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>horse</strong> is liable to<br />

come down at any moment. Exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> legs care-<br />

fully below <strong>the</strong> knee for spl<strong>in</strong>t <strong>and</strong> grogyness by plac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>'s feet on <strong>the</strong> lowest ground ; look care-<br />

fully to <strong>the</strong> pastern jo<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>and</strong> notice particularly if
