<strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs keep<strong>in</strong>g a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s to lose several <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>m with<strong>in</strong> very short periods <strong>of</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r with this<br />

malady, from which an op<strong>in</strong>ion prevails that this staggers<br />

is contagious. Noth<strong>in</strong>g can be more erroneous than this<br />

belief, as it is quite certa<strong>in</strong> it is <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> bad <strong>stable</strong><br />

<strong>management</strong> or by overfeed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> with unwhole-<br />

some food, or by <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> feed<strong>in</strong>g too voraciously as already<br />

mentioned. This disease is much more common with old<br />

<strong>horse</strong>s than young ones, ow<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> want <strong>of</strong> vital energy<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> digestive organs. Prevention <strong>in</strong> this compla<strong>in</strong>t is<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> better than cure, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore 1 would strongly<br />

recommend owners <strong>of</strong> <strong>horse</strong>s to look to <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>and</strong> give<br />

some attention to <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g :— Too much food given<br />

at one time after long fast<strong>in</strong>g or hard work, or neglect<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

give <strong>the</strong> animal water, is certa<strong>in</strong> to produce staggers.<br />

<strong>The</strong> hours <strong>of</strong> labour should be for limited spaces <strong>of</strong><br />

time, with proper <strong>in</strong>tervals <strong>of</strong> rest allowed, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong> regularly fed dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se <strong>in</strong>tervals. Every man<br />

must have felt <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g without his d<strong>in</strong>ner<br />

for three or four hours beyond <strong>the</strong> accustomed time.<br />

Exhaustion is sure to follow, which is produced by <strong>the</strong><br />

juices act<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong> coat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> an empty stomach.<br />

From five to six hours is <strong>the</strong> usual time between <strong>the</strong> meals<br />

<strong>of</strong> a labour<strong>in</strong>g man, <strong>and</strong> with a <strong>horse</strong> that is worked no<br />

longer <strong>in</strong>terval should elapse without feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> water-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g. When persons are occasionally so situated that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y cannot unyoke <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong>s at stated times for food<br />

<strong>and</strong> rest, <strong>the</strong>y ought to carry hay <strong>and</strong> a nosebag with<br />

a supply <strong>of</strong> corn with <strong>the</strong>m. Indeed, it is surpris<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

if <strong>the</strong>y do not do it on <strong>the</strong> score <strong>of</strong> humanity, that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

should be so bl<strong>in</strong>d to <strong>the</strong>ir own <strong>in</strong>terests as to neglect
