were disposed to respond to his pr<strong>in</strong>ted circulars<br />

call<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong>formation. <strong>The</strong>se reports are to be found <strong>in</strong><br />

Dr. Thompson's annals <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenza. <strong>The</strong> disease<br />

prevailed from <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> October to <strong>the</strong> middle ot<br />

December, 1775, <strong>and</strong> it appears from <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

extracts from <strong>the</strong> above-mentioned reports that <strong>in</strong>fluenza<br />

was epizootic among <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g August<br />

<strong>and</strong> September. Dr. Fo<strong>the</strong>rgill, writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> London,<br />

says, " Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>and</strong> dogs were much<br />

affected, those especially which were well kept. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong>s had severe coughs, were hot, forbore eat<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong><br />

were long <strong>in</strong> recover<strong>in</strong>g." Dr. Williams, <strong>of</strong> Dorchester,<br />

writes, "After <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> August I have heard<br />

from good authority that a disorder among <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

prevailed very generally <strong>in</strong> Yorkshire." Dr. Thomas<br />

Glass, <strong>of</strong> Exeter, writes, "I have only to add that <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> September,<br />

many <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>and</strong> dogs were severely afflicted with colds<br />

<strong>and</strong> coughs." Dr. Haygarth, <strong>of</strong> Chester, writes, " About<br />

August <strong>and</strong> September, <strong>in</strong> North Wales, almost all <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong>s were seized with coughs." Dr. K. Pulteney, <strong>of</strong><br />

Blamford, writes, "I heard much ot <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>and</strong> dogs<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g afflicted before we heard <strong>of</strong> it among <strong>the</strong> human<br />

race."<br />

<strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g quotation from Flem<strong>in</strong>g's work refers<br />

to <strong>the</strong> year 1782 :— " An epizootic <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluenza appears<br />

to have prevailed <strong>in</strong> Europe at <strong>the</strong> same time as <strong>the</strong><br />

epidemic <strong>in</strong> man." Huveman observed <strong>and</strong> reported upon<br />

it as it manifested itself <strong>in</strong> Germany ; <strong>and</strong> Abilguard, <strong>the</strong><br />

talented founder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Veter<strong>in</strong>ary School at Copenhagen,<br />

has left an admirable monograph <strong>of</strong> this disease, which
