In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 141<br />

<strong>of</strong> equal bulk. To prevent as far as possible any<br />

unusual flow <strong>of</strong> blood to this part, Nature has adopted<br />

a curious but, as usual, wise plan. <strong>The</strong> arteries are<br />

made to pursue an extremely w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> circuitous<br />

course, <strong>and</strong> enter <strong>the</strong> skull through small holes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bony process. <strong>The</strong>se holes are so small that <strong>the</strong>y admit<br />

<strong>of</strong> but little enlargement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> blood-vessels, <strong>and</strong><br />

thus to a great extent <strong>the</strong> chances <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation are<br />

lessened. Yet, notwithst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g this beautiful provision<br />

<strong>of</strong> an all-wise <strong>and</strong> far-see<strong>in</strong>g Creator, <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> is<br />

liable to be afflicted with disease <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>, <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

from <strong>the</strong> want <strong>of</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> so-called superior<br />

animal, man, by his subject<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> to violent<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>judicious exercise <strong>and</strong> hard driv<strong>in</strong>g or rid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

warm wea<strong>the</strong>r. It is but seldom that we f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>horse</strong>s<br />

attacked with megrims when rid<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> it seems<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipally <strong>horse</strong>s <strong>in</strong> harness that are subject to<br />

this disease. Hard driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> warm wea<strong>the</strong>r forces<br />

<strong>the</strong> blood to <strong>the</strong> head, <strong>and</strong> distends <strong>the</strong> arteries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

head more than <strong>the</strong> ve<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> consequence be<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

<strong>the</strong> small vessels cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong> get gorged with<br />

blood, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n its bulk is <strong>in</strong>creased to such an extent<br />

that it produces undue pressure upon <strong>the</strong> organs <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> nerves, which is followed by loss <strong>of</strong> power <strong>and</strong><br />

even consciousness. Frequently <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> will stagger<br />

backwards <strong>and</strong> fall, <strong>the</strong> result be<strong>in</strong>g disastrous to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>horse</strong> <strong>and</strong> all who may have <strong>the</strong> misfortune to be<br />

sitt<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d it. A tight curb or collar with over-<br />

driv<strong>in</strong>g is too <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> cause. It is a disease that is<br />

rarely met with except <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> months <strong>of</strong> June, July,<br />

<strong>and</strong> August. Megrims is <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> simplest
