cured with chloral ; he adm<strong>in</strong>istered from one drachm<br />

<strong>and</strong> a-half to two drachms each day. In one case he<br />

gave <strong>in</strong> all three ounces <strong>and</strong> a-half <strong>in</strong> twenty days, <strong>in</strong><br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> longer duration he gave six ounces <strong>of</strong> chloral<br />

hydrate, <strong>and</strong> both cases recovered. M. Verneuil gives<br />

two cases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Societe de Chirurgie de Paris, when he<br />

gave a drachm <strong>and</strong> a-half <strong>of</strong> chloral <strong>in</strong> twenty-four hours,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r case he gave two drachms <strong>and</strong> a-half <strong>in</strong><br />

twenty-four hours. He recommends beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g by<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g chloral by <strong>the</strong> mouth <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>traneous<br />

<strong>in</strong>jections. He cured five successive cases <strong>of</strong> tetanus<br />

with chloral hydrate.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se cases are sufficient to show that with care,<br />

patience, <strong>and</strong> perseverance, tetanus may be over-<br />

come ; but without <strong>the</strong> groom is a good nurse, <strong>the</strong><br />

veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon st<strong>and</strong>s a poor chance <strong>of</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

many successful cases <strong>of</strong> tetanus. It is ma<strong>in</strong>ly to <strong>the</strong><br />

effects <strong>of</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g, comb<strong>in</strong>ed with a rational adm<strong>in</strong>-<br />

ister<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e, that tetanus can be cured. In<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g medic<strong>in</strong>e it is necessary to use consider-<br />

able caution, as <strong>the</strong> rigidity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> muscles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neck<br />

occasion much pa<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> if <strong>the</strong> head be elevated.<br />

It is always best to give medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> a liquid form <strong>and</strong><br />

through a tube ; most practical veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeons<br />

keep a tube made for <strong>the</strong> purpose. In tetanus <strong>the</strong><br />

digestive functions are not impaired, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> poor<br />

onimal suffers much from hunger, <strong>and</strong> to keep up <strong>the</strong><br />

system as much as possible, thick gruel should be given<br />

by <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> a tube,
