In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 245<br />

stake, who will have <strong>the</strong>ir price for a <strong>horse</strong>, <strong>and</strong> do not<br />

deal after <strong>the</strong> Jewish manner <strong>of</strong> ask<strong>in</strong>g twice as much as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y <strong>in</strong>tend to take. It is by far <strong>the</strong> best plan for pur-<br />

chasers to go to such men who will let <strong>the</strong>m have a <strong>horse</strong><br />

on hire with <strong>the</strong> option <strong>of</strong> purchase ; if <strong>the</strong>y have to pay<br />

a little more at <strong>the</strong> first (which is doubtful) <strong>the</strong>y have a<br />

fair chance <strong>of</strong> try<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> animal. In buy<strong>in</strong>g a <strong>horse</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

h<strong>and</strong> should be drawn over <strong>the</strong> ribs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>gers<br />

pressed firmly between <strong>the</strong>m ; if <strong>the</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> appears tight<br />

<strong>and</strong> unyield<strong>in</strong>g it may be <strong>in</strong>ferred that <strong>the</strong> animal is<br />

hidebound, <strong>and</strong> consequently labour<strong>in</strong>g under some<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternal disease. I would most particularly draw <strong>the</strong><br />

attention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g purchaser to <strong>the</strong> fetlock jo<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong>, <strong>and</strong> if he f<strong>in</strong>ds a mark <strong>of</strong> a cut which may<br />

be only an <strong>in</strong>ch long or it may be some <strong>in</strong>ches, situate<br />

parallel with <strong>the</strong> shank bone, <strong>and</strong> immediately below <strong>the</strong><br />

pastern jo<strong>in</strong>t ; if such a mark is found it is certa<strong>in</strong> that<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> has been nerved, an operation which is per-<br />

formed by cutt<strong>in</strong>g a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nerve away to render<br />

a <strong>horse</strong> workably sound which has an <strong>in</strong>variable attack<br />

<strong>of</strong> navicular disease, such <strong>horse</strong> should be <strong>in</strong>stantly<br />

neglected. In exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> foot, if <strong>the</strong> sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

ho<strong>of</strong> are marked with circular depressions runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

parallel with <strong>the</strong> coronet, it is certa<strong>in</strong> that severe <strong>in</strong>flam-<br />

mation has existed at some time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sensible portion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>and</strong> is consequently liable to a return <strong>of</strong> it at<br />

any time after a little over exertion. See that both fore<br />

feet as well as <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>d ones are <strong>of</strong> an equal size, <strong>and</strong><br />

ascerta<strong>in</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y are quite cool <strong>and</strong> equally so ; attend<br />

to <strong>the</strong> sole, see that it is <strong>of</strong> its proper shape ; thrush can<br />

be detected by <strong>the</strong> smell, besides <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r symptoms
