first. A wound <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coronet, whe<strong>the</strong>r it proceeds<br />

from a tread or o<strong>the</strong>rwise, should be carefully <strong>and</strong> im-<br />

mediately attended to, because if s<strong>and</strong> or gravel get <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> wound it is likely to produce those deep-seated<br />

ulcerations that are termed pipes or s<strong>in</strong>uses, which<br />

constitute <strong>the</strong> disease called quittor. It may also<br />

proceed from any wound <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> any part <strong>of</strong><br />

it. In all ulcers matter is secreted, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> part affected<br />

cannot possibly heal until <strong>the</strong> matter is discharged. In<br />

wounds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot <strong>the</strong>re is much difficulty <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> matter<br />

plicated parts. <strong>The</strong> consequence is, it accumulates under<br />

must f<strong>in</strong>d an escape <strong>in</strong> some way, <strong>and</strong> frequently forces<br />

itself out <strong>in</strong> all directions, separat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> little fleshy<br />

parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot, form<strong>in</strong>g pipes <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>uses, which run <strong>in</strong><br />

all directions. If quittor arises from a wound <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

lower portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foot, <strong>the</strong> matter which is collected<br />

coronet, generally close to <strong>the</strong> quarter. This, however,<br />

does not manifest itself to any extent, as both <strong>the</strong><br />
