In <strong>the</strong> Stable, Field, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> Road. 15<br />

never had <strong>the</strong> bit out <strong>of</strong> his mouth, to which was<br />

attached a long cha<strong>in</strong> ; his mane <strong>and</strong> tail were never<br />

combed, <strong>and</strong> no blacksmith could touch his feet, <strong>and</strong><br />

when he died, his ho<strong>of</strong>s had grown to nearly twelve<br />

<strong>in</strong>ches long. Mr. Kime Hunter, <strong>of</strong> Thorpe Arnold, near<br />

Melton Mowbray, many years ago, owned a <strong>horse</strong> called<br />

J<strong>in</strong>gle Pot ;<br />

he was very vicious, yet all his stock turned<br />

out quiet <strong>and</strong> docile. It is <strong>the</strong> most <strong>in</strong>telligent colt that<br />

becomes by mis<strong>management</strong> <strong>and</strong> bad <strong>treatment</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

vicious <strong>horse</strong>, hence <strong>the</strong> necessity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> utmost caution<br />

on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> owners <strong>of</strong> young stock to obta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tel-<br />

ligent men to look after [hem. <strong>The</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> colt<br />

is a work that requires great pa<strong>in</strong>s, care, <strong>and</strong> patience,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have not <strong>the</strong> sense to teach it, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n ill-use it<br />

because it does not underst<strong>and</strong>, Such men should be<br />

placed <strong>in</strong> a foreign country among men whose language<br />

<strong>the</strong>y cannot underst<strong>and</strong> to be <strong>the</strong>ir taskmasters, who<br />

should punish <strong>the</strong>m every time <strong>the</strong>y make a mistake,<br />

<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y perhaps would have more patience with <strong>the</strong><br />

poor animal under <strong>the</strong>ir care, <strong>and</strong> not expect it to do<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs until it has been taught what it is expected to<br />

do. <strong>The</strong> careful tra<strong>in</strong>er will commence with <strong>the</strong> colt at<br />

its mo<strong>the</strong>r's side. By carefully h<strong>and</strong>l<strong>in</strong>g it, he will teach<br />

it to hold up its legs by lift<strong>in</strong>g gently at <strong>the</strong> fetlock, <strong>and</strong><br />

always us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> words " hold up." <strong>The</strong> colt soon<br />

recognises <strong>the</strong> sound, <strong>and</strong> as it f<strong>in</strong>ds it is not hurt, it
