DIABETES.<br />

This fortunately is not <strong>of</strong> such common occurrence<br />

with <strong>the</strong> <strong>horse</strong> as <strong>the</strong> human subject. It consists <strong>of</strong> an<br />

excessive discharge <strong>of</strong> ur<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> is <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong><br />

greed on <strong>the</strong> owner's part, many farmers sell<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

good hay <strong>and</strong> oats, keep<strong>in</strong>g only <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ferior for home<br />

consumption, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> consequence have <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong>s taken<br />

with this compla<strong>in</strong>t. <strong>The</strong> fungus <strong>of</strong> mouldy hay <strong>and</strong><br />

fusty oats will produce irritation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kidneys, <strong>and</strong> to<br />

mend <strong>the</strong> matter <strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>ten adm<strong>in</strong>ister powerful diuretics,<br />

which cause <strong>in</strong>flammation with an <strong>in</strong>ci eased action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

kidneys. <strong>The</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>ary surgeon is <strong>the</strong>n called <strong>in</strong> to cure<br />

that which ought not to exist, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>deed would not had<br />

<strong>the</strong>y really studied economy <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own pockets, <strong>and</strong><br />

kept good food for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>horse</strong>s. This compla<strong>in</strong>t is very diffi-<br />

cult to cure, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> remedies must be with a view <strong>of</strong><br />

lessen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> undue action. Bleed<strong>in</strong>g is sometimes resorted<br />

to, but this should not be carried on to <strong>the</strong> extent that it is<br />

sometimes <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>flammation. I have more faith <strong>in</strong> str<strong>in</strong>-<br />

gent medic<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>and</strong> counter-irritation ; strong mustard<br />

blisters across <strong>the</strong> lo<strong>in</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g astr<strong>in</strong>gent<br />

given three times a day will have good effect :— YVortle-<br />

berry leaf two drachms, catechu two drams, opium half a<br />

drachm. If it can be got green food <strong>and</strong> carrots should<br />

be given as well as bran mashes.<br />

STALING OF BLOOD.<br />

This is ano<strong>the</strong>r disease <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kidneys, <strong>and</strong> nearly<br />

allied to <strong>in</strong>flammation <strong>in</strong> its symptoms, <strong>and</strong> always<br />

manifests itself with nighly-eolonrcd ur<strong>in</strong>e mixed with<br />

Mood. Mostly <strong>the</strong> bowels are costive, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g
