management objectives. Harvest<strong>in</strong>g systems, utilization levels, and post-harvest<br />

treatments that can achieve the selected treatment effects are applied. F<strong>in</strong>ally,<br />

technical and economic feasibility is evaluated, and the environmental and manage-<br />

ment consequences of tested alternatives are determ<strong>in</strong>ed. A central concern, of<br />

course, is to apply and test harvest<strong>in</strong>g alternatives that have the capability of<br />

recover<strong>in</strong>g much of the wood material commonly left on-si te as residue. For<br />

comparative purposes, the effects of various levels o f <strong>in</strong>tensive utilization are<br />

compared to observed effects of conventional sawlog utilization and post-harvest<br />

residue disposal practices.<br />
