Generally, animals tended to be concentrated <strong>in</strong> the organic layers of the soil,<br />

particularly the 02 or humus stratum. Exclud<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>complete July samples, more<br />

than twice as many arthropods were found <strong>in</strong> the 02 layer as <strong>in</strong> the surface layer of<br />

I ltter or 01. The top 6 cm (2.25 <strong>in</strong>) of m<strong>in</strong>eral soil conta<strong>in</strong>ed only one-fourth as<br />

many animals as the humus and opulations <strong>in</strong> the woody layer were less than one-tenth<br />

of those <strong>in</strong> the humus (table 2 ! .<br />
