Nest tree species selected by each bird species are shown <strong>in</strong> table 5. Optirnu~<br />

habitat occurred <strong>in</strong> forests with an old-growth component (mean basal area for a1 1<br />

nest sites was 105 ft2/acre (24 m2/1ia). Most cavity nesters used large dbh nest<br />

trees. The mean dbh for 54 Pileated Woodpecker nest trees was 29.5 <strong>in</strong> (75 cm).<br />

The Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Common Flicker selected nest trees with a mean dbh<br />

greater than 20 <strong>in</strong> (51 cm). Hairy, Downy, Black-backed Three-toed, and Northern<br />

Three-toed Woodpeckers used trees less than 15 <strong>in</strong> (38 crn) dbh.<br />
