Mentoring Future Leaders
1. Trust
The mentee needs to trust that
• The mentor will not repeat what is said to
anyone else;
• His/her thoughts, beliefs, fears and ideas will
be respected and not critised;
• The mentor has the mentee’s best interest at heart; and
• What is discussed will not be used to the mentee’s disadvantage.
How can you earn the trust of a mentee? Explain to a mentee why you
decided to become a mentor and why you regard yourself as
trustworthy.
2. Acceptance and Care
Unless a mentee experiences
unconditional acceptance and care,
he/she might be hesitant to open
up. There should be no doubt in the
mentee’s mind that the mentor has
his/her best interest at heart.
The assumptions underlying
acceptance are that the mentee:
• Has worth and dignity as a human being;
• Has a right to make his/her own decisions;
• Has the creativity and capacity to make the right choices for his/
her life;
• Is responsible for the decisions he/she makes.
When the mentee experiences the above as true, he/she is ready to
engage in the mentoring process without fear of rejection.
