Key Mentoring Principles and Beliefs
Tick (!) the mentoring principles and beliefs you can identify with.
1. Every person holds the answers to his/her own challenges
2. The agenda for mentoring discussions should come from the
mentees
3. A mentoring relationship is an “adult to adult” relationship
4. Confidentiality is the cornerstone of the mentoring process
5. It is better for the mentees to plan their own journeys than for
mentors to “drive” them to a destination
6. Every mentee is unique and should be mentored in a different
way
7. If individuals become better, the whole gets better
8. There is enough for all of us (abundance vs scarcity)
9. To build trust the mentor can to show his/her own vulnerability
10. Fear, shame and guilt are obstacles to personal and professional
growth
11. Self love and self acceptance are prerequisites for loving and
accepting others
12. People will only change if they want to
13. A relationship of mutual trust, respect and openness is the
cornerstone of mentoring
14. The mentee has the answers, the mentor has the questions
15. Judgement destroys relationships
16. Learning (therefore change) occurs through action – the hand is
the cutting edge of the mind
17. Effective mentoring depends as much on the skills of the mentor
as on appropriate tools, techniques and processes
18. The aim of mentoring is to move performance to a next level
