The above inform<strong>at</strong>ion shows th<strong>at</strong> only less than half of the arable area in Eranad was<br />

occupied <strong>and</strong> cultiv<strong>at</strong>ed. Out of the total popul<strong>at</strong>ion of the Taluk, only 2% held almost all<br />

the l<strong>and</strong>s cultiv<strong>at</strong>ed, <strong>and</strong> about thirty percent were either tenants or laborers. It should be<br />

noted th<strong>at</strong> a substantial part of the popul<strong>at</strong>ion classified as ‘others’ were dependents on<br />

the occup<strong>at</strong>ional groups. For example, for the entire Malabar District 1901 Census<br />

demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> only46.6% of the popul<strong>at</strong>ion actually labored <strong>and</strong> the rest were<br />

dependents. In the case of the predominantly agri<strong>cultural</strong> Ernad, the number of<br />

agri<strong>cultural</strong> popul<strong>at</strong>ion including the dependents is likely to be more than the District<br />

average of 62.2%. This means th<strong>at</strong> the entire working popul<strong>at</strong>ion other than agriculture<br />

including dependents is likely to be about one-third of the total popul<strong>at</strong>ion. The figures<br />

on cultiv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> the livestock again show the agrarian character of the Eranad society.<br />

This only shows th<strong>at</strong> trade <strong>and</strong> industrial activities only remained secondary, <strong>and</strong> it was
