the present owner, th<strong>at</strong> is, such families were selling or transferring those l<strong>and</strong>s from the<br />

60s <strong>and</strong> 70s. The spree of l<strong>and</strong> transactions from the 60s might have been to evade the<br />

impact of l<strong>and</strong> reforms, but it also meant th<strong>at</strong> l<strong>and</strong> was becoming a commodity.<br />

Commodific<strong>at</strong>ion of l<strong>and</strong> was also facilit<strong>at</strong>ed by the growth of large market centers, such<br />

as Chemmad, <strong>and</strong> the establishment of large institutions such as the University, PSMO<br />

College, IOC <strong>at</strong> Chelari <strong>and</strong> MK Haji Hospital<br />

1971 census, compiled towards the completion of the process of l<strong>and</strong> reforms, gives the<br />

following inform<strong>at</strong>ion on the agri<strong>cultural</strong> scene:<br />

The st<strong>at</strong>istics clearly show th<strong>at</strong> the agri<strong>cultural</strong> popul<strong>at</strong>ion is now clearly divided into two<br />

classes, the owners <strong>and</strong> laborers, besides the other primary producers, in which fishermen<br />

of Parappanangadi <strong>and</strong> Vallikkunnu predomin<strong>at</strong>e.<br />
