The research team had decided th<strong>at</strong> the following fe<strong>at</strong>ures may be observed in the course<br />

of walking;<br />

a) Place names, its possible origins, <strong>and</strong> changes in place names, if any;<br />

b) Extent of the region covered by a place name;<br />

c) L<strong>and</strong> form<strong>at</strong>ions, like Paramba, vayal, pastures, rocky regions, slopes, low-<br />

lying regions <strong>and</strong> the coastal zone;<br />

d) W<strong>at</strong>er resources, such as ponds, streams, wells, river streams, <strong>and</strong> low-lying<br />

w<strong>at</strong>er pools like challi <strong>and</strong> kappu;<br />

e) N<strong>at</strong>ure of cultiv<strong>at</strong>ion, including floral <strong>and</strong> faunal wealth, <strong>and</strong> the changes<br />

occurring in the l<strong>and</strong>scape due to changes in cultiv<strong>at</strong>ion;<br />

f) N<strong>at</strong>ure of market centers, <strong>and</strong> the types commodities sold there;<br />

g) Transport facilities, including roads, <strong>and</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er channels;<br />

h) Houses , <strong>and</strong> their varieties, modes of construction, <strong>and</strong> the facilities;<br />

i) Religious centers their loc<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ure;<br />

j) Cultural centers, including reading rooms , clubs, Anganwadies, <strong>and</strong> other<br />

centers;<br />

k) Schools <strong>and</strong> health facilities;<br />

l) Government buildings <strong>and</strong> offices of political parties;<br />

m) Festivals <strong>and</strong> recre<strong>at</strong>ions;<br />

n) Historical monuments <strong>and</strong> archeological findings , if any;<br />

o) Any other fe<strong>at</strong>ure of social or historical interest within the locality.<br />

It was also decided th<strong>at</strong> in order to facilit<strong>at</strong>e walking, keeping in mind the general<br />

directions mentioned above, a locality identified by a place name will be tre<strong>at</strong>ed as the<br />

unit of our walking. The place was used because ward divisions in all the Panchay<strong>at</strong>s<br />

have been based on the principle of even distribution of popul<strong>at</strong>ion for electoral or
