sustained them. This destruction of environment has prevented the establishment of<br />

sustainable form of agri<strong>cultural</strong> production any more. Given the geological <strong>and</strong><br />

geographical character of the region, any <strong>at</strong>tempt to promote agriculture will have to take<br />

into account the ecological <strong>and</strong> socio-economic factors now guiding agriculture. It is not<br />

only a question of preserving the still remaining p<strong>at</strong>ams <strong>and</strong> parambas making them<br />

suitable for cultiv<strong>at</strong>ion, but also a question of regener<strong>at</strong>ing the destroyed p<strong>at</strong>ams <strong>and</strong><br />

parambas. There is also the question of who will undertake this oper<strong>at</strong>ion. In an<br />

<strong>at</strong>mosphere in which the thinking of the st<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> the dominant political parties in the<br />

region are influenced by market-friendly str<strong>at</strong>egies, <strong>and</strong> where the <strong>at</strong>titude <strong>and</strong> the world<br />

perception of the gulf migrant goes a long way in deciding the n<strong>at</strong>ure of policy decisions,<br />

there is only a very dim chance th<strong>at</strong> anyone will take the enormous risk involved in the<br />

regener<strong>at</strong>ion of the area.<br />

The transform<strong>at</strong>ion of l<strong>and</strong> in the area has also resulted in the growth of a ‘l<strong>and</strong> market’.<br />

Continuous l<strong>and</strong> transactions, not a fe<strong>at</strong>ure of the earlier period <strong>and</strong> the growth of<br />

infrastructures like road access, electrific<strong>at</strong>ion, development of different modes of<br />

communic<strong>at</strong>ion, apart from the proximity to various institutions like the University or a<br />

College, has resulted in the rise of l<strong>and</strong> values in all the areas. The commodific<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

l<strong>and</strong> surface encourages its use as a means of gener<strong>at</strong>ing profit, wh<strong>at</strong> has been called<br />

fictitious capital, <strong>and</strong> this leads to development of various forms like commercial<br />

cultiv<strong>at</strong>ion, giving the l<strong>and</strong> on lease, pledging the l<strong>and</strong> for loans of various kinds, or<br />

construction activities on such l<strong>and</strong>. The growth of this commodific<strong>at</strong>ion is indic<strong>at</strong>ed by<br />

the substantial growth of document writers, priv<strong>at</strong>e l<strong>and</strong> surveyors, <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> brokers all<br />

over the region. This commodific<strong>at</strong>ion process is already going on <strong>at</strong> a gre<strong>at</strong> pace, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

one the major contributing factors to the homogeniz<strong>at</strong>ion of l<strong>and</strong> surface, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

destruction of the n<strong>at</strong>ural environment. The l<strong>and</strong> surface is becoming subject to the logic
