rel<strong>at</strong>ions built by them. The environment <strong>and</strong> social rel<strong>at</strong>ions constructed<br />

by human beings can be called culture, in order to distinguish these forms<br />

from n<strong>at</strong>ural resources. Hence, the mode of production of m<strong>at</strong>erial life <strong>and</strong><br />

the socio-<strong>cultural</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ions are intertwined in a complex <strong>and</strong> yet, dynamic<br />

way, <strong>and</strong> history provides us with the tools for unraveling such<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ionships.<br />

e) The stress on social <strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> need not result in another variety of<br />

‘sociologist’ reductionism. The effort of the historian is not to tre<strong>at</strong> social<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>cultural</strong> aspects as fixed c<strong>at</strong>egories, the so-called ‘bedrocks’ of<br />

analysis , but try to unravel the rel<strong>at</strong>ions among various factors <strong>and</strong><br />

processes. This ‘rel<strong>at</strong>ional’ approach will investig<strong>at</strong>e the trajectories of<br />

human practice across space <strong>and</strong> time <strong>and</strong> tre<strong>at</strong> development itself as a<br />

represent<strong>at</strong>ion of human practice.<br />

There may be questions as to wh<strong>at</strong> all these have to do with the immedi<strong>at</strong>e<br />

task <strong>at</strong> h<strong>and</strong>, th<strong>at</strong> of the loc<strong>at</strong>ing the reasons for the problem of<br />

underutiliz<strong>at</strong>ion of agri<strong>cultural</strong> l<strong>and</strong>, as well as the lack of industrializ<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

the region. It can be shown th<strong>at</strong> the problem exists all over Kerala, where<br />

people have been withdrawing from agriculture, <strong>and</strong> the st<strong>at</strong>e has also not<br />

been in the forefront of industrializ<strong>at</strong>ion. It is possible to explain these trends<br />

in terms of the existing multifactor approaches<br />

, without going into the intricacies pf historical reasoning. But the problem<br />

appears different when perceived from the point of view of local development,<br />

when you have to tackle not a general problem th<strong>at</strong> affects the entire n<strong>at</strong>ion or<br />

a province, but answer the specific needs of the people living in a region,
