Kurunthotti, vallavanakku.v<strong>at</strong>hamkolli,kunni, an<strong>at</strong>hakara, velippar<strong>at</strong>hi, Henna,<br />

Sankupushpam, white <strong>and</strong> blue have been found in the parambas held by traditional<br />

physicians. Pulses like greengram, black gram, horse gram, gingelly, ginger, <strong>and</strong><br />

sesamum have been cultiv<strong>at</strong>ed in the area. There are references to the presence of flax<br />

<strong>and</strong> Palmyra. Fishing <strong>and</strong> sale of fish were widespread along the coast, <strong>and</strong> testimony<br />

from Parappanangadi indic<strong>at</strong>es large c<strong>at</strong>ches of prawn. Fish from the region reached far<br />

inside Malappuram district. Salt was also made, as shown by the mention of p<strong>at</strong>annas,<br />

although these p<strong>at</strong>annas are no longer used for making salt.<br />

It is thus clear th<strong>at</strong> the major resource of the region is the bio-mass, which is extensive<br />

<strong>and</strong> diverse. As an illustr<strong>at</strong>ion, we give below the list of medicinal herbs in Vallikkunnu<br />

Panchay<strong>at</strong>, which has been collected in an independent survey.<br />
