submerging fiber was stopped under the CPZ regul<strong>at</strong>ions, is now being rapidly<br />

transformed into a coconut plant<strong>at</strong>ion. N<strong>at</strong>urally planting coconut on a commercial basis<br />

does not viol<strong>at</strong>e CPZ regul<strong>at</strong>ions. This transform<strong>at</strong>ion of veget<strong>at</strong>ion means th<strong>at</strong><br />

numerous fruit bearing trees, spices, timber trees <strong>and</strong> medicinal plants have been<br />

destroyed.<br />

WE are reproducing a sample case of the transform<strong>at</strong>ion taking place in one of the<br />

Panchay<strong>at</strong>s, th<strong>at</strong> of <strong>Tirurangadi</strong>, by comparing the present figures with the estim<strong>at</strong>es<br />

given in 1935 resettlement survey. During the resettlement, the Panchay<strong>at</strong> consisted of<br />

two villages, Trikkulam <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tirurangadi</strong>, which have been combined for the present<br />

purpose. The present l<strong>and</strong> use st<strong>at</strong>istics also contain built areas, waste, marsh, <strong>and</strong> w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

sources which have been deducted for convenience. After making the adjustments for<br />

measurement, we get the following figures:
