CHAPTER THREE<br />

SELECTED ISSUES IN PREACHING--SEVEN THEOLOGIES COMPARED<br />

Implicit within chapter two's summaries of the<br />

theolo g ical models lie similarities and differences among<br />

the selected theologians' thought. Sections 1-VI of this<br />

chapter highlight that comparison and contrast.<br />

It is obviously impossible to make an exhaustive<br />

comparison/contrast of these figures. (A mere reading, not<br />

to mention an evaluation, of their combined works might be<br />

the work of several years.) This present study can only<br />

make a most preliminary comparison, 1 yet even so, it<br />

helps to pinpoint a few important similarities and<br />

differences amon g the theolo g ical models.<br />

For this comparison, the procedure is as follows. For<br />

each of the six aspects of preaching theolo gy (content,<br />

source, setting, purpose. communication, and the preacher as<br />

a person) mentioned at the be g inning of the previous chapter<br />

and considered in the presentation of each model within that<br />

chapter, one issue has been selected. (For example, from<br />

the content of preaching, the subject of the atonement has<br />

been chosen.)<br />

Two extreme statements appear at the beginning of the<br />

discussion of each issue. (Again, using the atonement as an<br />

example, the two statements are:<br />

The death of Christ objectively changed man's<br />

relationship with God.<br />

The death of Christ subjectively leads men to God.)<br />
