For related reasons, Lloyd-Jones took a stand<br />

against a call for immediate public decision following a<br />

sermon" (in contrast to many others with similar<br />

conservative theology). Although the preacher presents<br />

the truth with a goal of lives being changed, it is not<br />

his task to manipulate his congregation emotionally in<br />

order to promote decision.<br />

In addition to these statements dealing with<br />

practices to avoid, Lloyd-Jones offered constructive<br />

words for the preacher.<br />

The true preacher is a man (Lloyd-Jones held<br />

literally the Apostle Paul's injunction against women<br />

speaking in a church service.) whom God calls.<br />

The call involves an individual's God-given inner<br />

inclination toward a preaching ministry, encouragement<br />

from other Christians who recognize that person's gifts,<br />

and a growing internal contraint which allows no other<br />

career option.<br />

The church body must examine a man who professes a<br />

call, noting his qualifications regarding spiritual gifts<br />

and power. '4 's Without strong Christian character, a<br />

reasonable measure of intellectual acumen, and natural<br />

verbal ability, the preacher will likely fail.<br />

With the consciousness of God's call and<br />

confirmation from the church, the prospective preacher<br />

proceeds with formal education. During this time, he<br />

becomes thoroughly familiar with the Bible, systematic
