ceased thinking like a physician. He saw those to whom<br />

he preached as patients in need of healing. He never<br />

wasted precious time trying to make them comfortable or<br />

impress them with his skill. To dying men, Lloyd-Jones<br />

felt compelled to offer something more--a cure. One may<br />

argue with his prescription, but none can question his<br />

concern.<br />

VII. KARL RAHNER<br />

Largely as result of the Second Vatican Council, the<br />

Roman Catholic Church has seen significant change in<br />

recent years. In any analysis of the individuals most<br />

influencing . these developments, the name Karl Rahner<br />

surfaces ea;- . 1y. Karl Lehmann, one of Rahner's leading<br />

students, unabashedly called his mentor "one of the<br />

architects of modern Catholic theology." 1 Known<br />

primarily as a scholar (His published theological books<br />

and articles number in the thousands.), Rahner<br />

intended his work to serve preaching. "I really have<br />

endeavored to pursue a theology that looks to concrete<br />

proclamation in the Church, to dialogue with people of<br />

today. . . . The pastoral concern of proclaiming the<br />

Christian faith for today has been the normative aspect<br />

of my work."'<br />

Born in Freiburg, Germany on 5 March 1904, Rahner<br />

described his home as "a perfectly normal Christian<br />

family--Catholic but not bigoted." Rahner did not
