ministry can be most effectively learned 'on<br />

the job', the emphasis in Pastoral Studies at<br />

[name of college] is on preparing the ground<br />

for such learning; on exploring and creating an<br />

awareness of the context for pastoral ministry<br />

In contemporary society. In short the purpose<br />

is to help students to listen: to self;<br />

others; to society.<br />

The majority of colleges require students to take<br />

part in an extended parish placement. There, in the<br />

context of mutual relationship, both congregation and<br />

student benefit from the preaching experience. Many<br />

theological educators are moving the teaching of<br />

preaching and other skill—related ministry tasks, as well<br />

as other aspects of ministerial education to the parish<br />

setting.11<br />

Effective preaching comes from God, via the Bible<br />

and tradition. Material from these sources, as well as<br />

his own existential experience, communicates God to the<br />

preacher, who then offers himself appropriately to this<br />

hearers. Through this chain, a bridge is built between<br />

God and man.<br />

Theological colleges do much to aid this process by<br />

giving students a well—rounded education in preaching,<br />

with proper emphasis on each of its components.<br />

V. Overall Conclusions<br />

Chapter one opens with a statement of an overall<br />

hypothesis: a preaching lecturer's theology is a primary<br />

determinant of his teaching of preaching. The evidence<br />

gathered from the survey of preaching lecturers offers
