with a note of urgency. Lloyd-Jones quoted the Apostle<br />

Paul, stating that his words gave "a very perfect<br />

summary" of the evangelistic message.2.<br />

'They themselves shew of us what manner of<br />

entering we had unto you, and how ye turned to<br />

God from idols to serve the living and true<br />

God; And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom<br />

he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which<br />

delivered us from the wrath to come' (I Thes.<br />

1:9-10).<br />

Lloyd-Jones did not preach evangelism exclusively;<br />

he commended a balance between edification ("didache")<br />

and evangelistic ("kerygma") preaching. 2s. (Lloyd-<br />

Jones himself generally followed the pattern of preaching<br />

'edification' in Sunday morning services and 'evangelism'<br />

in the evening.)<br />

He further divided his edification preaching into<br />

two categories: "experimental" and "instructional."2<br />

In the first type of sermon, the preacher offers the<br />

believer practical instructions, "moral and ethical<br />

principles" on living the Christian life day to day,<br />

primarily as it applies to unique individuals...27<br />

Lloyd-Jones's sermons published in a book entitled<br />

Spiritual Depression: Its Causes and Cures would follow<br />

this model. This book contains sermons describing<br />

patterns of individual life which produce unhappiness and<br />

antidotes which restore joy.11e<br />

Instructional sermons focus on the social and even<br />

the cosmic aspects of the faith; God's will, not only for<br />

the individual, but for all humanity. Another<br />
