message is "all—important." Yet, the preacher's grasp of<br />

the message is equally necessary. And, Stewart affirmed<br />

that preaching, to accomplish its purpose, must convey<br />

the message in a manner the people can grasp.<br />

C. Karl Rahner<br />

1. Sources<br />

As we turn to Karl Rahner, we discover that 'Rahner<br />

lecturers' basically agree with 'Lloyd—Jones lecturers'<br />

on this chapter's second question: criteria for<br />

selecting sermon topics. On the third question, 'Rahner<br />

lecturers' agree with their 'Stewart counterparts'. On<br />

the first question, which refers to the source of<br />

preaching, the 'Rahner group' moves onto new ground.<br />

The 'Lloyd—Jones'+'Stewart lecturers', considered<br />

above, see the Bible as the single source of preaching.<br />

The preaching instructors who identify with Rahner see<br />

the Bible and other factors contributing material to<br />

preaching. What are these other factors? The response<br />

of 'Rahner lecturers' to question nine ("Preaching must<br />

be true to . . .") indicate the high priority they give<br />

to 'tradition' (table 31). Likewise, these lecturers<br />

expressed a greater openness (than 'Lloyd—Jones'+'Stewart<br />

lecturers') to interdisciplinary participation in<br />

preaching education. This openness demonstrates the<br />

importance they give, in teaching preaching, to theology<br />

and church history (38).<br />
