world'). Even so, the numerical ranking 'Lloyd-Jones<br />

lecturers' give 'the preacher's maturity' is lower than<br />

that of those other two groups (table 26). Following the<br />

response to question eight consistently, more<br />

'Lloyd-Jones lecturers' speak on this subject in class<br />

presentations than do 'Tillich lecturers', but again less<br />

than 'Stewart'+'Rahner lecturers' (28). In response to<br />

question 9, however, 'Lloyd-Jones lecturers' stand on the<br />

low extreme. Only a quarter of them believe a sermon<br />

must accord with the preacher's spiritual life (31).<br />

In contrast, Lloyd-Jones himself gave great emphasis<br />

to the preacher's own knowledge and experience. The<br />

following Lloyd-Jones opinions document this. The<br />

preacher cannot merely choose to preach; he must be<br />

conscious of a "call." i 'l His affirmation of a<br />

conservative confession of faith must be certain."'<br />

He works diligently at the preparation of himself for<br />

preaching in general and for specific sermons.16.<br />

Lloyd-Jones, even with his undying devotion to "the<br />

Truth," realized that preached truth came through<br />

personality.<br />

A sermon is meant to be a proclamation of the<br />

truth of God as mediated through the preacher.<br />

People . . . have come to listen to you (the<br />

preacher]; you are the man of God, you have<br />

been called to the ministry, you have been<br />

ordained; and they want to hear this great<br />

truth as it comes through you, through the<br />

whole of your being. They expect it to have<br />

passed through your thought, to be part of your<br />

experience; they want this authentic personal<br />
