On the continuum of consequences, the theology of<br />

Martyn Lloyd-Jones places him firmly on the right hand<br />

extreme. According to Lloyd-Jones, those rejecting or<br />

even merely unaware of the Gospel face eternal<br />

condemnation in hell.<br />

First and foremost we must show men their<br />

condition by nature in the sight of God. We<br />

must bring them to see . . . that apart from<br />

what we do, and apart from what we may have<br />

done, we are all born the 'children of wrath.'<br />

We are born in a state of condemnation; guilty<br />

in the sight of God.2<br />

Speaking of himself before conversion, and of others<br />

in the same position, Lloyd-Jones said, "I was under the<br />

wrath of God and heading for eternal punishment." A<br />

person's acceptance of Christianity's central truth, the<br />

vicarious death of Jesus Christ enables an eternitychanging<br />

reversal. God graciously offers grace, with the<br />

hope that sinners will receive salvation, and turn from<br />

hell to the gift of eternal life.<br />

Each of the next three also used reversal<br />

terminology in describing man's need. The 'sin' of man<br />

gives him momentum away from God and the ideal life.<br />

'Salvation' turns man around, dramatically improving the<br />

quality of life. In contrast to Lloyd-Jones; James<br />

Stewart, Rudolf Bultmann, and Paul Tillich focus on the<br />

need of man, and the benefit of reversal, primarily in<br />

this life, rather than an afterlife.<br />

On the question of the eternal destiny of the<br />

non-believer, James Stewart retained a "reverent
