in the Bible]." 2-7 To state it more consisely, the<br />

source and content of Stewart's preaching merged into<br />

one: the "keryqma, the proclamation of news, the<br />

heralding of the wonderful works of God." ..ze And, of<br />

course, the Bible presents the authoritative record of<br />

God's action, for "in every page of it I can encounter<br />

Jesus Chr1st." 11'' Following that, Stewart's first<br />

"plea" in the area of "sermon construction" was "for<br />

expository preaching."°<br />

2. Selection of Material from Sources<br />

In relation to the source of preaching, there is<br />

relative unanimity among Lloyd-Jones, Stewart, and the<br />

lecturers identifying with them. The Bible is the<br />

source. But 'Stewart lecturers' part company with<br />

'Lloyd-Jones lecturers' on the other two questions. On<br />

what basis does one select preaching subjects from the<br />

Bible? As documented above, 'Lloyd-Jones lecturers'<br />

emphasize, as the preacher's first priority, conveying<br />

God's message to the people. 'Stewart lecturers', in<br />

contrast, place greater stress on the congregations who<br />

receive preaching. These lecturers' perspective on the<br />

preacher's priority? Conveying God's message to the<br />

people.<br />

In support of this, note the fact that 'Stewart<br />

lecturers' considered "helping students to understand the<br />

purpose of preaching" as a more important goal of<br />

teaching preaching than "helping students to see God as
