3. With pictures of the seven theologies in place, the<br />

next step was the statement of hypotheses describing how the<br />

theologies, singly or in groups, potentially affect the<br />

teaching of preaching. It was at this stage of research<br />

that the subject of academic homiletical training came into<br />

play.<br />

Relating education in preaching to the seven theologies<br />

required a 'stepping back' from those models to view them<br />

from several vantage points.<br />

First, I looked for common features all seven<br />

theologies share. The resultant statement of foundational<br />

agreement enabled general observations about all teaching of<br />

preachina.<br />

As alluded to above, a second question followed.<br />

Beyond broad consensus statements, how would it be possible,<br />

on the basis of more specific agreement, to group the<br />

theologians? To the degree that various theologies<br />

exhibited similarities, I could offer common hypotheses in<br />

relation to the resulting groups.<br />

And, of course, I developed hypotheses relating to each<br />

of the seven individual models.<br />

Chapter four offers a summary of the hypotheses and<br />

reasoning behind them.<br />

4. After the statement of hypotheses, the next<br />

research focussed on the actual survey responses from<br />

current lecturers in preaching. These responses offered a<br />

wealth of information. The correlation and analysis of the
