II. 'Objective'/'Subjective' Lecturer Subgroup<br />

Responses<br />

Three other questions, mentioned in chapter one, do<br />

not add directly to our knowledge of the teaching of<br />

preaching in Great Britain. Contrasting responses to<br />

these questions do, however, create several subgroupinas<br />

of the lecturers who responded to the survey. Members of<br />

a subgroup share a common trait which distinguishes them<br />

from the other lecturers. By comparing the composite<br />

responses of contrasting subgrou p s. this study offers an<br />

understanding of the differences (and similarities) among<br />

various types of lecturers, and, more broadly, types of<br />

theological colleges.<br />

Survey question seventeen enables one such<br />

subgrouping. 12 It asked the lecturers to choose a<br />

preacher—theologian with whose theology of preaching they<br />

most identify. This question presented seven names, from<br />

which they were to select one. The persons listed on the<br />

survey were the same ones whose theologies of preaching<br />

are presented in chapter two. Six of the lecturers did<br />

not respond to this question. Forty—nine did name the
