This manual describes the pinnipedes and cetaceans of the
world's oceans, from order to species level. It distinguishes three
main geographical regions: the northern parts of the Atlantic and
Pacific Oceans and the waters of the Arctic Ocean adjacent to these,
and the southern hemisphere. Within these regions the distribution
and migrations of marine mammals are described, and the principal
features of their biology '(reproduction, diet, mode of life, etc.)
are discussed. Information on the- history of scaling ant. whaling,
on the present stocks of the animals, and on current methods whereby.
