One end is spade-shaped and the other end pointed, with square cross
section. It is used to tighten the rope that attaches the chain to
the cleat.
The tow-rope is a steel rope 28.5 mm in diameter. The whale is
brought to the ramp and delivered to the factory-ship by means of the
tow-rope.
Equipment for nflagging" the whale. A red woollen flag, measuring
140 x 170 cm, is fastened to a bamboo pole from 6 to 6.5 metres
long. The number of the whaling shim is painted in white in the centre
of the flag, and the serial number of the flag appears in te lower left
and umper right corners. The ship's number also appears every 50 cm
along the flagstaff.
There is a steel spike at the lower end of the flagstaff, made
of seamless pipe 35 nu in diameter. A sPear-li1(e tip' is welded to the
lower end of the pipe.
