It iS believed that only one subsnocies of the ringed seal --
Fusa h. hisnida -- occurs in the liorth Atlantic and te Arctic Oceans.
In waters adjacent
to.the northeastern.part of the Atlantic
(Baltic Sea) there is another local subspecies; Eusa.h..botnica, or
the baltic ringed seal.

The ringed seal has'characteristic coloui;ing (Fig. 4).
colour of the back varies from brownish-grey with an olive tinge to
dark-grey and almost black. The belly is light-grey with a silvery
tinge. Light streaks are interwoven over the general background,
creating a lacy-network pattern in the form of oval rings.
